26. European XFEL (X-ray Free Electron Laser)
◼ Research Department (Group/Team)
- Sample Environment and Characterization
◼ Research Field: Chemistry, Physics, Biology
◼ Required Research Field of Study: Physics, chemistry, or biology
◼ Duties to be Performed During the Dispatch
- Sample characterization, organization of experimental data
∘ [Project]: The project focuses on testing and optimizing, and characterizing 3D-printed nozzle designs for generating liquid flat sheets, essential for X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) experiments. Liquid sample delivery* is critical for matching high pulse repetition rate, up to 4.5 MHz at European XFEL (EuXFEL), while minimizing sample consumption, ensuring stability, and meeting diverse experimental conditions. Current liquid sample delivery has challenges such as flow fluctuation, vacuum compatibility, and nozzle reproducibility. By developing next-generation liquid sheet jets, we aim to overcome these limitations and enhance experimental capabilities. The intern will contribute by characterizing and refining nozzle designs to meet the special needs of XFEL experiments.
* Sample delivery means placing sample, like liquid or crystal, into the interaction point with the x-ray beam for data collection.
∘ [Job Description]: We expect the intern to learn and perform jet characterization using our advanced test setups, including laser light for thickness characterization and a high vacuum platform to understand sheet stability under vacuum conditions for different sample systems using 3D-printed flat sheet nozzles. An important aspect of the internship is the thorough collection and organization of experimental data.
The intern will be responsible for maintaining accurate records to support ongoing research efforts. This internship provides an opportunity to collaborate with international research groups on innovative projects. Working at EuXFEL, an international research facility, will offer the intern valuable research experience and opportunities for both personal and professional growth in a diverse, multicultural environment. This experience will help prepare them for future opportunities in the global scientific community.
